Taplona river basin parched as WRD fails to maintain bhandaras

CANACONA: The basin of the Talpona river is parched dry as the Water Resources Department (WRD) has failed to maintain the bhandaras here.

The three bandharas constructed by spending lakhs of rupees on the Talpona river from Amone to Partgali in Poinguimin are in a bad shape.

The WRD blocks water on these bandharas from November to December by placing wooden planks; however this year. a fibre plank was placed at the Kumbhegaal bandhara  only after January.

“The river basin has dried up and this is affecting the orchards in Thaalni and Kumbhegaal,” said local Umesh Desai from Thaalni.

“There is no drinking water currently in Kumbhegaal and Thaalni villages, let alone for orchards and fields. WRD should pay attention to our demands,” said one of the locals.

“Demands for water, roads, electricity issues in the village have been persistent for last many years but, no one is trying to resolve them ,” added Desai.
