Taps in Panjim, surrounding areas go dry as pipeline bursts

PANJIM: The water taps in Panjim, Taleigao and surrounding areas went dry following a pipeline burst near Bhoma-Banastarim early Tuesday morning.

First the pipeline was damaged on Tuesday afternoon by the workers of Electricity Department who were erecting electricity poles. On receiving the information the PWD workers rushed to the spot and repaired the pipeline. However, the water was not supplied to the consumers on Tuesday evening.

Again at 4 am the pipeline burst a few away from the earlier damaged spot. As a result there was no water supply for most of the areas of the Tiswadi taluka on Wednesday.

The PWD (water supply) stated that due to major breakdown of 900-mm dia DI conveying mains at

Muslimwada-Bhoma near Banastarim, there will be restricted water supply to consumers of Panjim, Taleigao, Santa Cruz and Sant Andre constituencies for two days December 22 and 23 including Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Bambolim and defence establishments.

But the consumers complained that they did not receive water throughout the day.

When contacted, PWD executive engineer Nivruti Parsekar  said water supply was disrupted as the pipeline broke twice at Bhoma, Banastarim. At first the pipeline was damaged by the Electricity Department workers while they were digging to erect a pole on Tuesday afternoon. The damaged pipeline was repaired and after few hours water was released from the Opa water treatment plant but again the pipeline was ruptured a few metres away from the earlier spot, he said.
