ARAMBOL: The ugly menace of big, black oil emanating tar balls have sullied the face of sandy Arambol beach much to the annoyance of locals, tourists and beachgoers, who are left with oil sticking to their feet.
Scientists feel that from May to October, the strong current churn on the high seas and gives rise to the unpleasant tar balls which contaminates both the water and the beach.
“The Tourism Department spends lakhs of rupees on promoting ‘365 days of Goa tourism’, but in reality, the shores have turned black with the tar balls. The tourist spots also lack basic amenities. The government should stop wasting money on advertisements when nothing is being done at ground level,” Aditi Sharma, a tourist from Delhi said.
“The shore has turned black in the past four days which hampers the movement of visitors,” said local trader Dharmendra Jivji, adding that money is spent more on advertisements than actual improvements.
The local businessmen have appealed to the government to take prompt steps as tourists might shift their destination to other locations in Konkan and elsewhere if the beaches are not maintained here.
