CANACONA: The Canacona Catholic Schools’ Parent Teachers’ Association has submitted a memorandum to Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, urging him to ensure the passage of the Medium of Instruction Bill during the ongoing assembly session.
The members said the bill will ensure regularisation of grants to minority primary schools having English as the medium of instruction.
According to members, the association’s main objective is to step up pressure on the elected representatives to pass the bill giving grants to English medium primary schools during the ongoing assembly session. Around 25 members were present on the occasion.
The signatories include St Teresa of Jesus School, Chaudi; St Anthony School, Galgibag; St Anne’s Institute, Agonda and St Sebastian School, Loliem, Canacona. Tawadkar said that he would put forth their grievances before the House during the Assembly session.
Meanwhile, parents from Navelim submitted memorandum to Navelim MLA Avertano Furtado on the medium of instruction.
A delegation led by Nazareth Fernandes, PTA chairman of Rosary High School, Navelim, submitted the memorandum to the minister.
They demanded the scrapping of the advisory committee set up by the government to look into the issue of MoI and called it a mockery while recounting the role and actions of the government in the past on MoI.
Reiterating their demand for the dissolution of the present committee, they pointed out that the issue of MoI has been resolved by the government after lengthy consultations and the bill was placed in the assembly which is with select committee.
“The parents’ choice is to be respected. We also demand that the government introduce the Bill in terms of the approved Cabinet note and pass the same during the monsoon season of the Goa legislative assembly,” said Nazareth.
Furtado assured that he would support their demand and stated that he has always been steadfast in his support of the parents’ demand on the issue.
