PANJIM: The Commercial Tax Department has collected around Rs 5 lakh on the first day after it froze bank accounts of defaulter firms.
“Step taken by Commercial Tax Department to freeze bank accounts of big defaulters has started giving expected results. On the first day after account freezing, around Rs 5 crore are received in government treasury. There will be more recoveries in the days to come,” an official said.
The Department had begun a crackdown on defaulter firms, which have avoided paying tax to the government under various Acts. The Department identified 77 such firms from whom around Rs 120 crore is recoverable in the form of Tax, Interest and Penalty; and their bank accounts stand frozen.
