Taxis to strike if speed governors are made compulsory

To submit formal representation on Monday; Ask why it is not made mandatory in private vehicles

PANJIM: Taxi operators have again threatened to strike if speed governors are made compulsory for taxis. Taxi operators from North and South Goa on Thursday met Transport Department officials protesting the implementation of speed governors in taxis.
Speaking to Herald, North Goa Tourist Taxi Owners Association Vinayak Nanoskar said taxi operators are ready to go on strike if the government does not address their grievance.
He said that the formal representation to the government through the Transport Directorate will be submitted on Monday.
He said that the Transport Department has stopped certifying the annual fitness of the taxis and that unless speed governors are installed certification will not be done.
Nanoskar questioned why this financial burden on taxi operators and why this is not implemented in private vehicles too.
He said the cost of Rs 8000 cannot be borne by operators to install the speed governors. He suspected a scam behind the sudden implementation of the act.
Transport Director Nikhil Desai informed the taxi operators that his department is only the implementing authority and they are only implementing the rules under the Motor Vehicles Act.
