MARGAO: A 19-year-old was attacked by a group of six youth with choppers at the Rawanfond Circle, Margao, on Sunday night. Two assailants have been detained.
Eyewitnesses claim that it was the result of an old enmity between a Rawanfond-based gang and a Davorlim-based gang. They also stated that the victim was with friends when he was ambushed, but the latter managed to escape.
Margao Police informed that Rohit Chavan (19), a resident of Rawanfond, was attacked by six youth with choppers at around 8.30 pm, due to which he suffered serious injuries. He was taken to Hospicio Hospital, Margao, and then shifted to Goa Medical College, Bambolim.
Police have detained two assailants, Krishna and Mushtak, and are on the lookout for the others. They have also registered a case against the six accused, including Akshay Naik, and Arav.
This assault is reminiscent of the gang culture prevalent in these areas, where there have been sword attacks, shootings and other acts of violence in the recent past. Locals have demanded strict police investigations, better patrolling and a system to dissolve the tension among the various gangs.
Meanwhile, there was major confusion and tension outside Hospicio Hospital as no ambulance was available to take the victim to GMC. The victim’s family and friends, who had gathered outside the hospital in large numbers, complained that the ambulance arrived only after 30 minutes.
