MARGAO: An 18-year-old boy lost his life in a rain-induced mud wall collapse while his father was injured at Talsan Zor, Fatorda, on Wednesday morning. A portion of the mud wall collapsed on Kartik Chavan while he was sleeping, killing him on the spot.
Locals gathered at the scene and rushed Kartik to South Goa District Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.
Fatorda police identified the father of the deceased as Digvijay Chavan. According to available information, both were residing in a rented room at Talsan Zor, and worked as labourers. Last night, they returned from work, had dinner, and went to sleep. On Wednesday morning, around 6.30 am, a portion of the mud wall of the rented room collapsed. Kartik, who was sleeping, died instantly, while his father, who was sleeping in the opposite direction, sustained injuries.
Sources indicated that the rented room is on comunidade land. On receiving the information, officials from the Deputy Collector and Mamlatdar of Salcete, along with ward councillors, visited the spot. The councillors urged the government to rehabilitate the family.
Meanwhile, the police on Wednesday registered a case under Section 194 BNSS. The police reported that they received information from South Goa District Hospital in Margao, stating that Kartik, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was brought dead to the casualty ward.
It is pertinent to note that several people have constructed rooms on comunidade land, numbering around 120, which are believed to be illegal.
