PONDA: The search for a job at Kundaim Industrial Estate turned tragic for five women as a tempo loaded with water bottles coming from behind ran over them killing two and injuring the other three.
Tempo driver Lumo Gavde has been taken into custody. Police said that he claimed that the brakes failed on the slope and he was unable to control the vehicle. The vehicle will be inspected by RTO to check for brake failure.
Ponda police said Deepali Devu Shetkar (40) from Kumbarwada Usgao and Jyothi Vishnu Gawade (42) from Veling Priol were walking along the road when they were crushed to death by the tempo just 300 metres from the IDC gate at main road.
Three other women – Anita Naik from Usgao, Mangal Baragade and Asmitha Baragade from Usgao – who were walking ahead of Shetkar and Gawade ran to save their life and escaped with minor injuries. They were shifted to the Ponda Sub-district Hospital for treatment.
The women were returning after having been interviewed at a factory and were walking towards the IDC gate to the bus stop to return home when the accident took place.
