Temporary parallel road proposed between Cortalim and Verna

Proposal is for avoiding 22-km diversion and to be used till new Zuari bridge is inaugurated; PWD Minister inspects the stretch; Farmers oppose land acquisition

VASCO: With a plan to build a parallel road to allow traffic between Cortalim and Verna, PWD Minister Ramakrishna (Sudin) Dhavalikar and traffic officials inspected the stretch of road, on Saturday.
The government is planning to build a temporary parallel road through the fields in Cortalim to avoid the 22 km diversion for completion of Zuari bridge work.
The government plans to acquire parallel field from the farmers on temporary basis and plans to return them in its original form after the Zuari Bridge is commissioned.
However, the farmers from Cortalim are not in a mood to give their lands for the road work. The farmers claim that they have still not received the compensation for the fields acquired earlier.
“We have still not received any compensation for the previous acquisition and now they have come back again asking for our lands. Are we going to give our lands for free like the previous occasion?” asked a local farmer.
Dhavalikar, however, said that their previous compensation has got blocked because of their land title issues. “We have taken down all the points during the inspection and all these factors will be taken up at a meeting to be held on Sunday. The diversion of this road will also be accordingly decided only after the meeting,” he said.
The PWD Minister told that they would be visiting the road stretch again on Sunday and he would be accompanied by the TCP Minister Vijai Sardessai too.
