VASCO: Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida on Monday informed that the installation of temporary shed for the fish vendors, which will have to be shifted from the existing fish market shed to build a new modern fish market complex, will commence shortly.
On Monday evening, a joint review meeting was held at the Mormugao’s Deputy Collector office, where in Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, Vasco Police, Mormugao Municipal Council Chairperson Nandadeep Raut, Chief Officer Arvind Bugde, Deputy Collector Sachin Desai and others were called to discuss the status of the temporary market shed installation and to commence the work of fish market complex.
It may be recalled that recently there were round table talks and negotiations between the MMC and the retail fish vendors who had asked about the ownership of the property where the existing shed is standing. Then there was also a fear among the fish vendors that if the project work gets stalled due to some reason then where will they go, all these questions were answered by the MMC and has urged the fish vendors to co-operate.
Later, after the meeting, Vasco MLA stated that the meeting was a review meeting and the installation of temporary shed for fish vendors will start shortly. The contractor will install the shed structure soon.
Mormugao Deputy Collector Sachin Desai said that as per the review meeting, the MMC has decided to start the work of installation of temporary shed. There were other points for discussion which were raised by the fish vendors in the last meeting.
Meanwhile, the Vasco Fish Vendors Association Head Caridade Pereira has written a letter to the Chief Officer of Mormugao Municipal Council complaining that the retail fish vendors are not receiving any cooperation from the council and the police.
In that letter, Pereira has claimed that the assurances given by the local MLA and MMC have disappeared in thin air and in reality the illegal selling of fish outside the fish market shed is continuing. She has also demanded two policemen at 8 am and at 8 pm to keep vigil and take action against the violators and illegal fish vendors.
