VASCO: The elected members from ten panchayats from Mormugao taluka and the Block Development Officer visited BITS Pilani, Goa campus, to know how about the biogas plant there.
The BDO is exploring the possibilities of seeking guidance from the BITS Pilani faculty members in setting up biogas plants at each panchayat to treat their wet waste.
In a press release, BITS Pilani said that the panchayat secretaries and Sancoale Sarpanch Girish Pillai, Cortalim Sarpanch Senia Pereira, Majorda Sarpanch Samson Gonsalves along with their Panch members were part of the delegation led by BDO Prasidh Naik.
The delegation met Prof Srikanth Mutnuri, Head, Department of biological sciences and A K Patil, Estate Manager of BITS Pilani, Goa Campus.
During the visit, Prof Srikanth took the delegation to the site of biogas plant and explained its functioning and made a detailed presentation on its operation. He also emphasised that key point of functioning of any biogas plant is segregated waste. He advised all the panchayats to initiate awareness on waste segregation at source across the villages.
Prof Srikanth mentioned that the biogas plant at BITS campus is functioning since November 2010 as the campus segregated waste collection system is in place. Later, the panchayats expressed their interest in setting up the same for their villages with support of BITS Pilani, Goa Campus.
