‘Tenant verification helps curb crime rate, solve disputes efficiently’

MARGAO: In a bid to curb the crime rate and also solve crimes  efficiently, South Goa’s police stations took on massive drives to check tenant verification compliance across the district, and completed 36,146 verification procedures in 2022.

“The main aim of filling tenant verification forms and providing details of all the premises given on rent is to dissuade crimes,” said Colva PI Filomena Costa.

“If every police station verifies the details of every tenant in the State, it makes it very easy for the owner of the premises to involve the police station, in case of any criminal case or dispute,” he added.  PI Ravi Dessai of the Maina Curtorim police station said that tenants should furnish their full names and any aliases, along with their father’s name, permanent address, and other essential information mentioned in the form.

“This way, owners of the premises  can  check  into the past  and present history of  their tenants. Once the form is filled  there is no scope  of the tenants getting away with a crime,” he said.

This also helps the police track down absconding accused, especially those who have committed heinous crimes in other States and seek refuge in Goa.

Advocate Amaranth Desai said if a tenant has submitted his official details, he fears that the police can trace him to his workplace as well, resulting in him losing his job, as well as his home.
