Indian tennis legend Leander Paes has formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), marking a significant political shift ahead of upcoming elections. The move comes years after his association with the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which he had joined during the party’s expansion push beyond West Bengal.
Paes, who was born in Kolkata and has strong roots in Goa, officially joined the BJP in New Delhi in the presence of senior leaders, including Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. Calling it a “big day” in his life, Paes said he was grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for giving him the opportunity to serve the nation.
The 1996 Atlanta Olympics bronze medallist remains one of India’s greatest tennis players, with 18 Grand Slam titles and a decorated Davis Cup career. In 2024, he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, joining the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Speaking about his vision, Paes highlighted the need to strengthen India’s sports infrastructure and youth development. He praised initiatives like the Khelo India programme and emphasised equal opportunities and pay for boys and girls in sports. “We must build a strong future for our youth,” he said, underlining the responsibility that comes with his new political role.
Rijiju termed Paes’ entry “historic,” adding that his achievements and influence need no introduction. With West Bengal heading into elections soon and Goa polls scheduled next year, Paes’ political journey is set to be closely watched.
