QUEPEM: Tension has gripped Bonsai-Curchorem over the shooting incident wherein a labourer engaged in illegal sand mining was killed and another critically injured by some unidentified persons on Wednesday around midnight.
Pressure mounted on the Curchorem Police to solve the murder mystery and the residents hope that the police will crack the case and bring the culprits to book and put an end to the reign of sand mafia.
Following the shooting incident, the police swooped down on those involved in extraction of sand illegally and arrested five persons namely Vivek Naik, Amey Adel, Yogesh Adel, Vijay Adel and Ramdas Adel, all from Bansai, Curchorem. They were released on a bail of Rs 10,000 each by the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Quepem.
Though the Curchorem Police are making all efforts to nab the assailants, they have come under severe criticism from the opposition for collapsing law and order in the State. The opposition have demanded that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant should resign as Home Minister.
Director General of Police Jaspal Singh on Friday afternoon visited Curchorem Police Station and took stock on the situation.
Meanwhile, Quepem DySP Nilesh Rane said that the gun with which the worker was killed was used to kill wild animals. The police are now trying to find out the details of persons owning firearms, either legal or illegal in the locality.
