Villagers irked as sarpanch, secretary were not in office; Demand locking of panchayat office; Say will fight against the hotel project

VASCO: Tension prevailed at Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim (CAC) on Friday after angry villagers demanded the locking of panchayat office over the absence of sarpanch and Panchayat Secretary in the office during working hours.
According to reports, a group of CAC villagers had organised a protest rally in the village to oppose the proposed seven-star hotel project and objected to the draft Coastal Regulation Zone notification, 2018.
The protestors had planned to handover a memorandum opposing the hotel project and draft CRZ notification 2018 to the Sarpanch Martha Saldanha and secretary, however irked with their absence during office hours, they then started demanding the closure of the panchayat office.
The drama continued for over two hours, even as a team of Verna police and BDO Mormugao Deepak Vaingankar rushed to the site to control law and order situation.
“For the past ten years the CAC villagers have been fighting to oppose the third mega hotel project proposed at Arossim village by Delhi-based ‘Competent Automobiles,” Olencio Simoes, a CAC villager said.
