PONDA: Tension prevailed at Kundaim in the morning after a company dug a huge chamber secretly under the cover of darkness at the Government school premises at Dasolwada, Kundaim.
When villagers learnt about the discreet plans, they gathered in large numbers to oppose the tower stating that it was hazardous to health and children would be affected if it was installed in the school premises.
The Ponda Police rushed at spot to maintain law and order and around 200 villagers signed a memorandum opposing to the erection of the tower and submitted to the panchayat.
Villagers questioned the audacity of the company to set up a mobile tower in the school premises at the cost of student health and wondered why it was needed when they had no connectivity problems with five such towers already functioning in the vicinity.
PTA Chairman Jokim Barboza alleged that the company had not obtained NOCs from the health department, panchayat and school headmaster.
Vijesh Naik expressed concern over the proposed tower and said that this was a health hazard and added that he was at pain to see the insensitivity of the government towards students and questioned the Chief Minister and wondered whether this was the development of education he was all harping about. He also feared that if such a tower was erected in the school then the students would leave and the school would be automatically shut down.
Local panch Rupesh Kundaikar also opposed the tower.
In a letter addressed to Kundaim panchayat, the villagers said that such a tower is detrimental to the health of children as it emits radiation and would oppose it tooth and nail.
