CANACONA: Students of the primary section and their teachers of St Thereza of Jesus School, Chaudi, had a lucky escape on Friday when a portion of the terrace parapet of the Canacona Municipal Council building at Chaudi came crashing down on the pathway used by the students and teachers.
The CMC’s residential-cum-commercial building has been in dilapidated condition for last several years and the occupants of the shops and flats have blamed the CMC for the poor condition of the building.
According to sources, the incident took place minutes before students and teachers began to arrive along the pathway to proceed to their school. A large portion of terrace protection wall, which incidentally has overgrown bushes jutting out, gave way and came crashed down on the pathway.
Incidentally, the building is one of CMC’s two oldest commercial buildings in the precincts of Chaudi’s old fish market, which was constructed decades ago. Despite being in precarious condition, both buildings continue to be used for commercial and residential purposes.
When contacted, CMC Chairperson Simon Rebello agreed that the buildings are in bad shape and are in need of urgent maintenance work.
Rebello said, “I will ask the PWD engineers to examine the condition of the two old municipal buildings.”
