CALANGUTE: Following the
recording of Venkat Raman’s statement by Calangute Police on Saturday evening,
Raman’s advocate Azhar Mir, talking to media, said his client is emotionally
devastated and numb by the events since his son’s body was discovered in a bag
in Chitradurga, Karnataka, last Monday.
“You cannot
even imagine the grief he’s going through. His wife is in jail, his son is no
more; what justice can he expect? What happens after this does not really
matter to him anymore. There is no justice for Venkat now. There is no justice
for Chinmay (the deceased son) now. I hope justice means there is peace,” the
advocate said.
Mir said the
divorce proceedings between his client and Suchana are at an early stage and
the court order in November was only about the child’s custody arrangements.
“The case is only one-year-old. It will go on for some more years. Divorce
cases can go on for five years. They’re not divorced yet,” he said.
He said the two
met in 2008 and married in 2010. “It was a love marriage,” he said. The couple
separated in 2019.
Queried about
the meeting of the husband and wife in the police station, Mir declined to
comment. “I don’t want to say anything about what happened when they met,” he
said.
Responding to
queries, he said it was for the police to find out what happened. “The police
investigation started from the moment they found the body in the bag and
they’re retracing the events which led to that,” he said.
He said during
the meeting with Calangute Police, Venkat Raman spoke about the divorce
proceedings. “What has gone is not going to come back. Why this happened – we
can only guess. Maybe she did not want him to meet his son. But even if she was
upset, she did not have to end his life in this world. Even if there was
harassment by Venkat, why did she have to do this to the child?” he asked.
Mir said they
would like to finish with the police inquiry in Goa as soon as possible, within
the next two days. “There are certain rituals which have to be performed by the
family for the peace of Chinmay’s soul for which he has to go back to his
family,” he said.
