The Navy showed much more empathy than the Dabolim MLA did

Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho has been elected by the people of Dabolim, and that includes the people of Sao Jacinto. So when he came out of a function and told reporters that the activities of some “people” of Sao Jacinto Island, one wondered whether he was the guardian MLA of the people whose first instinct should have been parental and brotherly towards his people, when he tweeted this: “It would be in the fitness of things that the Indian Navy submits a report/complaint to the Goa Police as soon as possible to be able to hoist the flag.”
Now why would a minister in the Goa government and an MLA from Dabolim want the Navy to file an FIR against his own voters, when the Navy found no reason whatsoever to file any complaint or FIR? If he heard of any tension in the village or any information about the people of Sao Jacinto objecting to the raising of the flag, don’t you think he should have immediately rushed there and spoken to the people? And then he as the guardian MLA should have spoken to the Navy and told them that he would handle the situation amicably.
Why did it take Captain Viriato Fernandes, an ex-Navy man to have to act as the bridge and take it upon himself to go and meet the villagers along with the Navy personnel and defuse the situation? Wasn’t that the natural role of the MLA? Especially when the villages from St Jacinto, did not do anything, absolutely anything for their activities to be labelled as anti-national?
Herald salutes the Navy and its top commanders, for showing empathy with the people. Empathy is all about understanding, of feeling for the other person group. Of understanding their point of view and then shaking hands. The Navy realised that the people of the island were proud Goans and proud Indians. It is sad that the local MLA and perhaps even the Chief Minister did not understand this.
After all, why do people elect MLAs? For protection, for sympathy and understanding, especially when they have done nothing wrong. If the Indian Navy could see this and understand this, while the local MLA wanted the Navy to file a complaint against his own people, it a very very sad day for Goa.
