Theft of hero-stone handiwork of antique smugglers: GHAG
HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, SEPT 28
Disappearance of a hero-stone from Satteri is a handiwork of antique smugglers who are spreading their roots in the State, heritage activists claimed on Tuesday.
“There is an organised antique smuggling racket in Goa, which are eying State’s ancient treasures which are lying unattended and un-notified in various places,” GHAG executive member Prajal Sakhardande said in a press conference.
He said that the theft of ancient hero-stone (Viaragal) from Nagve village in Sattari taluka is an act of antique smugglers. “State government’s lethargy in notifying such important monuments is giving a free hand to these anti social elements,” he added.
The activist said that if government fails to take any action in tracing the culprit it will be clear that the antique smuggling in the state will continue in near future.
The hero-stone, dating back to 12-13th century, was found missing on September 14.
The heritage activist said that all the un-notified sculptures and other antiquities are in grave danger and it is time for the government to act and put to end the loss of this treasure.
