Thieves take advantage of BRICS, make merry at Arlem Police Quarters

Residents shell-shocked to find 18 water meters stolen

MARGAO: With the entire police force busy in preparations for the upcoming BRICS summit, the thieves made merry at the Police Quarters at Arlem, Fatorda by stealing as many as 18 water meters leaving the residents shell-shocked.
The entire Goa Police force numbering to over 6,000 has been exclusively engaged these days for the upcoming BRICS.
The situation has created a vacuum in the entire policing system. The residents of the police quarters, who returned from duty, were shell shocked to find their water meters stolen by some unknown culprits. The incident came to light at around 12.20 am as there was no water supply.
The families of the police personnel complained of having no security for the Arlem Police Quarters from external threats. Over 32 families of the police personnel reside in the quarters.
A visit to the quarters revealed the sorry state of affairs. Almost three complexes have been abandoned as they are in a dilapidated state.
Balbir Rane, who resides in the quarters said, “The quarters are ill-maintained with bad drainage and there is no compound wall. Thick bushes have grown around the quarters thereby increasing the chances of such theft attempts”.
“The streetlights were repaired once but they turned non-functional and were never repaired,” Rane added.
Earlier, some portions of these quarters had collapsed. The police personnel have also informed that their families fear that the buildings might collapse any moment.
The Margao police on Tuesday took over fours hours to reach Kharebandh where a person allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at a residence.
