This migrant-inhabited ward lacks sanitation facilities

PANJIM, FEB 23
Bhatlem-Odlem Bhat, Ward XVII of the Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) appears shabby when compared with other parts of the city.
Mostly inhabited by migrants for availability of affordable accommodations sans sanitary facilities, this ward has remained neglected despite being with the ruling panel.
Locals in this ward started a side business by renting any available spare corner in the house.
In fact, one of the main problems facing this ward with a voter population of 1035 is lack of sanitary facilities.
“But who cares?” says one of the tenants at Chincholem-Bhatlem who have to walk a kilometer to use public toilet. Her landlord has rented twenty-two ram-shackled rooms for monthly rent between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 for each room.
Tenants are thus compelled to use fallow paddy fields along main road to answer nature’s call.
“We only have paddy fields here,” promptly tells one outspoken girl as adults remain tight-lipped about their condition.
“Ironically, a toilet which was being built for this area about a year ago is yet to be completed and nobody seems to be bothered as to why it has remained incomplete,” she says.
“A new toilet and bathroom is being built but our enquires revealed that it is being funded by Taleigao MLA and it’s not for the tenants but for the landlady, she further states.
Another local who has rented four rooms of her house, too does not have any sanitary facilities. In fact, she does not have any toilet in her house. “We have constructed one for us but it is not operational as yet,” she further disclosed.
Outgoing corporator Uday Madkaikar who was excluded from Babush’s panel, recently, was not available for comments. Taleigao MLA dropped Madkaikar for his alleged role in the market scam and brought in Prajot Santosh Vaigankar to contest from ward XVII.
Madkaikar who was once considered to be confidant of Taleigao MLA, is now contesting as an independent.
