Colvale police has arrested fugitive driver of the truck connected to the fatal accident in Thivim, that took place earlier on Saturday. The fatal hit-and-run incident near the SBI Cansa Board in Thivim has left the community in shock. The incident, which occurred prior to 13:09 hrs, involved a reckless driver of a truck bearing registration number GA 08 T 5494.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver operated the truck in a rash and negligent manner while traveling from Thivim to Assonora direction. The truck collided with an Electric Ola scooter, bearing registration number GA 03 AX 2254, that was proceeding in the same direction. Instead of stopping at the point of impact, the truck continued forward, dragging both the scooter and its rider for a considerable distance towards the extreme right-hand side of the road.
The rider of the Electric scooter, identified as Sujata, daughter of Suryakant Salgaonkar and aged 26 years, resident of Naachinola Aldona, suffered severe injuries to her face as a result of the accident. Tragically, despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries upon arrival at the District Hospital in Mapusa.
The driver of the truck, later identified as Pramod Kashinath Gawas, aged 39 years and resident of Mavxi Valpai Sattari Goa, fled the scene of the accident, abandoning the truck on the spot
Upon receiving information about the incident, a swift response was initiated under the supervision of SP(N) Porvorim and SDPO Mapusa. A team led by PI Colvale Vijay Rane, along with officers Santosh Narvekar, Sandeep Malik, and Nandu Karbotkar, sprang into action.
After a rigorous pursuit, the accused driver, Pramod Kashinath Gawas, was apprehended and brought to the Police station. He has been charged with culpable homicide under sections 279 and 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with section 134(a)(b) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Gawas has been placed under arrest and is currently in police custody pending further investigation into the incident.
