MAPUSA: With piles of household waste and construction debris dumped along the highway at Thivim, the place has become a garbage zone.
Long time residents of the village allege that people from the colonies that have newly come up in the village are the culprits, while the newcomers blame the daily commuters for the garbage menace.
Be that as it may, the local panchayat is unwilling to clear the garbage saying it’s a duty of the pollution control board to collect the garbage dumped along the highways.
The garbage dump has also become a place of stray menace as the waste food thrown at the place attracts cattle and dogs. The gathering strays have also been causing inconvenience for free movement of vehicles.
Sandesh Naik, a daily commuter, said, “Many people throw garbage at this place and the same remains lying for days and sometimes even for months.”
Meanwhile, the Panchayat authorities say that they have a door to door garbage collection system in the village, including the new colonies.
