Thousands of litres of water wasted as Tilari Canal leaks

Pernem: Tilari Canal, going through the Torxem village, is leaking, leading to wastage of thousands of litres of water at Torsem. Local farmers claimed that due to bad quality of work carried out of contractor has made the canal leak. When Water Resource Department learnt about it, the department installed plastic sheets to prevent water from but even then, the flow of water continues.

Local farmers have appealed to the State government to either repair the canal or to install pipeline.

Locals said that the canal has been damaged at various places resulting in wastage of huge amounts of water. They also said that the purpose of canal is not being fulfilled since the water is not reaching the plantations where it is require the most.

“The purpose of this canal was to provide water to farmers  but the quality of work was low standard due to which, the canal is leaking. If this continues, it will also dangerous for houses located close to the canal. The WRD has tried to cover up this substandard work by installing plastic sheets in the canal”, Shivram Parab a farmer said.

“This canal project was taken up only to benefit the contractor who did not use proper concrete material but instead put up a layer of cement mix directly on soil”, a local Umesh Gad alleged.
