MARGAO: At the time when people are struggling for regular water supply, thousands of litres of water have gone wasted due to a loose valve at Gogol, Margao on Thursday. For two hours water went into the drains.
This is the second such incident of water wastage due to valve problem in recent days in Margao. A few days before a similar incident were reported near the power house, Aquem.
As informed by the locals, suddenly at around 3 pm they noticed a flow of water from the pipeline laid down by the Public Works Department. The flow of the water was so high that nearby areas flooded in a few minutes of time.
“There was water all over and it continued to flow till 4.30 pm. We had informed the concerned department, but it took them a long time to reach the site and repair the damaged valve”, said one of the citizens.
After inquiry it has been revealed that the high pressure of water and loose valve lead to the wastage of water.
It has been observed that such types of incidents are reported on a regular basis in Salcete taluka wherein water is being wasted due to leakage and sudden burst in pipeline.
The leakage in the pipeline at Benaulim near the Maria Hall still continued. The concerned authority is yet to repair the pipeline, despite complaints from the citizens.
Speaking to Herald, an official from the PWD, requesting not to publish his name, said that they are helpless and there is no proper system to trap the leakage in the pipeline.
“We have also noticed that water pipelines are being damaged at the time of digging the road for laying cables and other works. Many times, the concerned officials at the site don’t even inform the department, as they hide the leakage by dumping the mud over it”, he said.
He further said that many times leakages are reported due to high pressure, and loose valves.
It is pertinent to note that people from several parts of the State are complaining about the irregular water supply, and on the other side the issue pertaining to the hefty water bills has created tensions amongst the consumers. However, the wastage of water continues here and this is due to leakage and burst in the pipeline.
