MARGAO: The traditional Fama of Menino Jesus was celebrated with great pomp, gaiety and religious fervour at the Our Lady of Merces Church, Colva.
Thousands of people from all walks of life descended on the Our Lady of Merces Church since morning to participate in the festivities. The miraculous statue of Menino Jesus was brought down from the altar after the 5.30 am Mass celebrated by Fr Rocklyn Da Costa. The statue was later taken in a procession and was then kept for public veneration. In his homily, Fr Rocklyn called for revival of faith, adding “we must give witness to our faith”.
Masses were held at the church since morning till evening as people thronged to seek blessings of Infant Jesus and to offer thanksgiving for favours granted. Childless couples and those suffering from ailments participate in the Fama festivities in large numbers to seek blessing of Menino Jesus.
Huge serpentine queues of devotees lined up along the road leading to the church were seen since morning.  The Goa police made elaborate arrangements for smooth conduct of the festivities. Additional force was requisitioned from Vasco, Quepem and Margao police sub-division
to strengthen security arrangements.
