CALANGUTE: Rs 24 lakh in new Rs 2000 currency denomination was seized by the Calangute Police from three locals on December 13 night near Hotel Crystal Sand at Gaurawaddo, Calangute.
Acting on a tip-off that three men, Sushant Valvaikar from Borim, Ponda, Shamsundar Palyekar from Mapusa and Kishan Korgonkar from Parra were travelling in a Swift D’zire (no GA.05.3963) to exchange the new currency notes, the cops followed the car and caught them at Gaurawaddo, Calangute near the hotel.
Accused Sushant Valvaikar speaking to the media said that he was promised two per cent commission for exchanging the old notes and they had a target of exchanging Rs 1 crore in the next two days. He also said this shady trade is going on at many places in the state where old notes were being exchanged on a commission basis.
Jivba Dalvi PI Calangute said, “After receiving info that exchange of currency is going on we went on a hot pursuit and overtook the vehicle. While interrogating them, we came to know that such dealings were going on in many places in Goa and the commission slabs were up to 30%! This money will be sent to Income Tax Department and further investigation will be conducted by the I-T as well as the Calangute police.
Police have also taken into custody the vehicle and three mobile phones.
