Three dead in Paddi mishap

Three persons died, while the driver had a lucky escape when the car in which they were traveling went off the road at Voddlem Xhet, Paddi, on New Year's Day.

The car (GA-09-A-5033) hit a roadside tree, killing one person on the spot, while two others died on the way to hospital.

The driver Somnath Naik from Pantemol-Cuncolim had a lucky escape even though the vehicle was totally damaged in the accident. A case under sections 279, 304 (A) IPC for rash and negligent driving and endangering human life has been registered against him by the Cuncolim police.

Police said the ill-fated car driven by Somnath was proceeding from Cuncolim towards Canacona on December 31 at 11.50 pm carrying Ravindra Arun Mapari (26), Saish Pundalik Phade (21), both residents of Hoddar-Curchorem, and Sandesh Krishna Naik (32) of Cumbarjua.

On reaching at a sharp turn at Voddlem Xhet, Paddi, the car driver reportedly lost control over the vehicle and it swerved off the road. The impact was such that the front door of the car opened and Mapari who was seating in the front was flung out of the car and died instantly.

The other two occupants, Saish and Sandesh, who were seating on back seat suffered grievous injuries and died on the way to hospital. Assistant Sub Inspector P D Dessai who is investigating the case arrested Somnath who was later released on bail.
