Three injured as Russian goes on stabbing spree in Baga

Police arrest tourist after a chase; injured are stable; accused sent for medical and psychological examination

CALANGUTE: A Russian national went on stabbing spree near Baga beach on Tuesday, injuring three locals.
Calangute Police arrested Edward Petrovich Goryachew after a long chase which involved more than 10 policemen surrounding him at Baga beach along with some locals, Calangute Police said.
The stabbing began around 8.30 am. According to witnesses, the foreigner with a knife in his hand started stabbing whoever got in his way. There were neither arguments nor fights, he just stabbed the people, locals said.
Locals said that Goryachew appeared to be under the influence of liquor or narcotics and stabbed three local residents, including a shop owner. He then fled from the scene on a motorcycle and continued to brandish the knife when he was tracked at Baga beach by a team of policemen.
Realizing that he was surrounded by policemen, Goryachew began running towards the sea but was pulled out from the waves with the help of locals.
“The accused has not yet been interrogated. We have sent him for a medical and psychological examination in the government hospital. All three injured were shifted to a private hospital and their condition is stable,” Calangute Police Inspector Tushar Vernekar said.
Police have registered an offence against Goryachew under Sections 324, 452, 427, 323, 326 and 379 of IPC based on the complaint from Jalaram Thapa, resident of Khobrawado Calangute, one of the injured persons.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said there are many similar cases in the area. “It is up to the police to find out the reason why the foreigner was behaving like that and under what influence he was acting,” Lobo said.
