MARGAO: The officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Goa Regional Unit, seized three kgs of gold valued at Rs 96,87,960 at Dabbolim Airport.
Based on information that gold would be smuggled by an international passenger arriving from Oman to Goa at 7.45 pm, the DRI officers kept a discreet watch on certain suspicious passengers after they came out from the aircraft and proceeded towards the Immigration Hall. Once the passengers reached the Customs Arrival Hall, the baggage of the suspicious passengers was screened and checked thoroughly but no gold was found. Simultaneously, the DRI sleuths searched the toilets/washrooms located near the Immigration Area, from where 26 bars of gold of 10 roles each, bound together with black cello tape, weighing 3 kgs, were found hidden inside a “Tissue Dispenser”.
One international passenger was detained for inquiry and the two men working for the private agency who were posted for night duty as washroom/toilet cleaners were arrested by DRI to probe their role in the whole scheme of the smuggling of gold.
