MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council has passed a resolution to beautify three key junctions, including the Court junction with adequate footpaths and well-widened roads, as beautification plans identified by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, during his last visit to Mapusa.
The Council meeting on Friday decided to widen the left side of the road leading to St Xavier’s College, up to housing board, with the construction of pedestrians-friendly footpaths.
The other two junctions include the one opposite Dattawadi crematorium and the other leading to electricity department office, using Rs 82 lakh-fund received under 16th Finance Commission.
The Council also passed a resolution to rehabilitate the thirteen kiosks that obstructed the widening of roads. The kiosks owners will now be shifted to the 1st floor of KTC Bus Stand. Kiosk owners with a registered area of 5 sq mtrs will get 8 sq mtrs space, while those with over 5 sq mtrs will be provided a space of 16 sq mtrs.
A resolution was also passed to revise the pay-parking rates in municipal market. The MMC had earlier floated a tender for the pay-parking on the lane at Shakuntala statue and outside the municipal gate at Rs 2 for two- wheelers and Rs 5 for four-wheelers.
However, a month ago the bidder rejected the tender and subsequently the Council has decided to increase the pay- parking rates and collect the fees employing their staff for the job.
Councillor Sandip Falari was of the opinion that once a fee is charged for parking, people who park for the entire day would shift to other ‘free’ areas, allowing more vacant spaces, besides creating additional revenue for the council.
It was also decided to provide uniforms to all daily-wage municipal workers so that they can be easily identified.
