COLVALE: Three murder convicts, who were sentenced to life imprisonment, were released on health grounds as per the order of Goa State Sentence Review Board.
The three convicts — Raghunath Naik (91), Mariano D’Silva (79) and Shivayya Marihal (75) — native of Karnataka, who were lodged in the Central Jail at Colvale, were released on Independence Day after serving over 10 years of imprisonment.
Central Jail Superintendent Shyam Sundar Parab informed that the prisoners have been released as per the order from the Governor Mridula Sinha, who had visited the jail in February last year.
“These prisoners have been released due to old age and deteriorating health. They were bound to a wheel-chair. One of the convicts has turned blind as well,” Parab informed.
“They were supposed to be released on Liberation Day and the government finally cleared the file in May. The Governor has the power to pre-mature release the prisoners,” he added.
The prisoners were handed over to their respective families, who were informed prior to their release.
