Three of 4 MLAs pay up for 2014 Brazil WC junket

PANJIM: After nine months, three of the four MLAs, including Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado, Aldona MLA Glenn Ticlo and Velim MLA Benjamin Silva, reimbursed around Rs 15 lakh each, which they owed to the Sports Authority of Goa, which had ‘sponsored’ their week-long Football World Cup 2014 Brazil junket.

Herald had in its Wednesday edition underlined the failure of the ruling MLAs to refund money they owed to the public exchequer, even after nine months and four reminders. One of the MLAs – Glenn Ticlo – had even thrown a tantrum at Herald, when the issue of repayment was raised in public interest.
Now, only Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida remains to pay up the balance amount. Almeida has apparently sought additional time from the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) for the repayment of the dues. Till date he has paid Rs 2 lakh.
The payment came only after SAG sought Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar’s intervention in the matter for necessary directions to these MLAs, who had did not pay the dues even after four reminders over the last nine months, and after Herald’s report.
A senior official confirmed that three MLAs – Furtado, Ticlo and Silva – have paid Rs 15 lakh each to SAG on Wednesday. The official also said that Almeida has asked for additional time.
As per the report, each of the four MLAs has to pay Rs 14,84,815. Since Furtado had earlier paid Rs 3 lakh, he paid the balance Rs 11,84,815 on Wednesday. On the other hand Ticlo and Silva, who had paid Rs 2 lakh each, paid
up the balance Rs 12,84,815 each.
