Three sentenced to life in prison for 2017 Calangute fish market murder

MAPUSA: In a significant development, Mapusa Additional District Court-I Judge Kshama Joshi sentenced three Calangute residents, Joseph Ismail Sequeira, Ceon Fernandes, and Mahesh Rampal, to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each. The trio was found guilty of grievously assaulting Tyrone Nazareth on June 24, 2017, resulting in his death.

Tyrone, a 22-year-old with a criminal record, was brutally attacked with a knife and chopper by the accused at the Calangute fish market, in a dispute stemming from previous enmity. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Following the crime, the perpetrators had gone into hiding but were apprehended at the Mollem check-post while attempting to re-enter the State. The court based its judgment on the compelling and incriminating evidence presented by the police team, led by Mapusa SDPO Jivba Dalvi, who was the Calangute PI, then.

During the trial, the prosecution meticulously built a strong case against the accused, calling upon 19 witnesses. Public Prosecutors Adv Francis Noronha, Adv Sunita Nagvekar, Adv Anuradha Talaulikar, and Adv Roy D’Souza effectively represented the state.
