VASCO: Four structures and a toilet located close to the Baina shore, Vasco, were washed away due to sand erosion, after the sea rose to dangerous levels Thursday evening. No one however was injured in the incident as the occupants had recently vacated their premises in fear of demolition.
The structures belonged to Jafar Shaikh, Nazir Shaikh, Uttappa Chalwadi and Rafiq Kasim Kunti.
According to information, the sea started swelling in the afternoon and the toilet and the vacant structures located within high tide zone along Baina beach got damaged and collapsed along with the roof at around 5 pm Thursday.
“The occupants of the structures had recently vacated them in fear of demolition as these structures were part of 121 structures on which the Goa State Coastal Zone management Authority (GCZMA) had issued demolition notices. If they had not vacated their premises then it could have been a disaster with casualty,” said a local resident.
Even in June last year, the State authorities had declared around one-kilometre stretch of coast from Ravindra Bhavan complex, Baina to Katem Baina as unsafe for human habitation and the office of deputy collector, Mormugao, had then issued eviction notices to 34 structures which were located within the high tide zone along Baina beach.
DYSY Mormugao, Suchita Desai said, “I visited the site and noticed that few structures which were located close to the sea got washed away. I feel even the other structures in the vicinity are facing danger. It is high time that the disaster management authority should do something before other structures get washed away.”
