MARGAO: A holiday at the famous Goan beach proved tragic for the Sayyed Ansar family from Tumkur as a teenage girl drowned in the swimming pool of the hotel they were staying at and two others critical.
Around 10 members of the family arrived at Colva yesterday and booked into a hotel there and were enjoying their holiday. This morning two sisters aged 17 and 11 years accompanied by their mother’s sister aged 22 ventured into the pool at around 7.30 am when there was no pool attendant or lifeguard on duty.
As they began splashing in the pool they drifted towards the deeper end and began struggling. That is when the 22 year old screamed for help and her relative 22-year-old Sayed Sultan tried to help but found himself in danger of drowning.
Other staff of the hotel and other occupants rushed in and rescued the three girls and the boy too. The three girls were rushed to Hospicio where the 17-year-old was declared dead while the 11-year-old was given treatment and the 22-year-old was referred to GMC hospital.
Incidentally, the family was scheduled to leave Colva on Friday and travel elsewhere. But the tragedy has forced them to postpone their plans.
Police have currently registered a case of unnatural death and according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Dinraj Govenker the case is being examined and if necessary case will be booked against the hotel management. Sayed Sultan who tried to help his relatives insisted that there was no attendant at the pool and further when questioned said there was no board stating when the pool could be used. However, it is learnt that the pool is thrown open to guests only from 9 am to 6 pm when an attendant or a life guard is on duty.
