Three trawlers seized for violation of fishing ban

Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar reiterates his seriousness about enforcing the monsoon fishing ban

MARGAO: Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar said another three trawlers were seized for various violations, while reiterating that the Fisheries Department is serious about enforcing the monsoon fishing ban that is presently underway.

Halarnkar added that with the latest three, the total of seized trawlers have gone up to six. Speaking about the violations, he cited how they found LED materials on the trawler, which was being unpacked. He also said they found another trawler returning to the jetty and that when questioned the trawler had claimed that they were stuck in the sea due to some technical breakdown. Nonetheless, the fishing catch from such trawlers are auctioned while legal action is being taken against the trawler owners for the other violations.

Halarnkar, who pointed out that a team of police have been formed to monitor the jetties, stated that soon the jetties will come under CCTV surveillance. He also added that while the issue of inspecting imported fish for formalin is done by another department, the State government is serious about this issue too. He added that the issue of insurance for fishermen is also something the Fisheries department is taking up.
