PANJIM: In what could give sleepless nights to those indicted by Justice Pendse Commission in the infamous one day international cricket ticket gate scam of 2001, the government promised that it would soon initiate action against them and take up the recommendation of the report with the Board of Control for Cricket in India afresh.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar gave this assurance on the floor of the House on the concluding day of the monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
“We were waiting for the High Court order to take action against all those involved in the scam as indicted in the report… Since the writ petition is now disposed of, action will be initiated,” he said in response to a calling attention motion on the controversial scam.
A few legislators raised apprehension over the delay in taking action against the guilty, including former Goa Cricket Association President Dayanand Narvekar, who faces criminal charges.
BJP MLA Dr Pramod Sawant had earlier moved a calling attention motion over the issue.
Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar replied that the inquiry report was not accepted by the Congress government. However, after the present government came to power, it accepted the report. “The SAG then communicated the decision to the GCA secretary on July 12, 2012 and due care was taken not to allot the Nehru Stadium to GCA for any of their events unless and until the managing committee including Narvekar, Phadke and Shankardas ceased to have any connection with the GCA,” Tawadkar said in his reply. The recommendation in the report which was rejected by the Conress govt was challenged in the HC through a writ petition filed by one Melwyn Fernandes.
