MARGAO: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday alleged that the World Environment Day messages on June 5 by the Governor, Chief Minister, and Environment Minister among others were an act of hypocrisy at its best, with the BJP governments at the Centre and in State set to go ahead with projects that will cause large scale destruction of Wild life Sanctuaries & National Parks in the Western Ghats region.

AAP cautioned that the damage will be irreversible to the biodiversity hotspot.

AAP leader Elvis Gomes along with Sidharth Karapurkar in a short address on social media said, “Tinkering with one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in the Western Ghats will cause ecological damage that will be permanent.”

Karapurkar said that rare species of flora and fauna which adds up to the richness of the region will be a casualty.

“Documented studies have shown different species of nearly 721 plants, 235 birds, 219 butterflies, 70 mammals, 75 ants, 45 reptiles, 27 amphibians and 2 rare species of dragonflies besides several others. The BJP government has done this by keeping the people under lockdown when courts are practically closed. Hope people and the young in particular take responsibility to protect the Western Ghats, which is recognised by UNESCO as our heritage,” said Karapurkar adding that the party will soon be making a detailed presentation to the Union Environment Ministry to reconsider the proposals.
