PERNEM: Believe it or not! This has happened in Goa and not Bangladesh. Around six passengers on the Tiracol-Kerim ferry had a narrow escape after the vessel was stranded in the middle of the river after it ran out of diesel on Friday afternoon.

The stranded passengers, a tempo with cooking gas and a few motorcycles were later towed away safely to the Kerim side by a rescue operation carried on by the Captain of Ports, Coastal Police and villagers by 5 pm after a harrowing ordeal that took almost two hours.

Ferry workers said, “The vessel was old and the fuel gauge was not working and hence they could not ascertain the amount of diesel that was remaining in the tank.”

They also added that there was no extra fuel onboard either. Locals also pointed out that the vessels along this route keep breaking down quite often due to poor maintenance.
