PANJIM:  To attain progress, peaceful atmosphere is of utmost importance, said Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza and called upon the people to shun away from activities that will disturb the peace of the country and the state.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the 70th Independence Day function at Mapusa.  He said, “Due to the Independence, the country was ushered in a democratic form of Government due to which several development welfare schemes have provided a boost to the country and the state.” 
He said, “Goa has implemented unique schemes for benefit of all, which are not implemented by other states.” 
A ceremonial parade was held in the precincts of the Collectorate at Mapusa by police, NCC cadets and NSS volunteers from Bardez.
The Deputy Chief Minister inspected the guard of honour and took the national salute. MLAs — Glen Ticlo and Michael Lobo, Mapusa Municipal Council chairperson Sandeep Falari, Additional Collector III Sanjeev Gadkari, Dy Collector Narayan Gad, SDPO  Mahesh Gaonkar and mamlatdars of Bardez were present. Students too attended.         
Celebration  at Betul Fort 
Betul: The “History Lovers Group” along with Betul villagers celebrated the 70th Independence Day at the historic Betul Fort. 
MLA Chandrakant Kavalekar and artist Sachin Madage were the main guests. 
Briefing on the history of Betul Fort, Madage said, “Betul fort is the only fort which was built on the orders of Shivaji Maharaj in Goa. There are historical records, which specify that Shivaji had given orders to the Hawaldar of Balli to construct a fort on the mouth of River Sal in 1679.”. 
He emphasized the importance of History Lovers Group to work with the locals so that this trend of nationalistic celebrations should be consistent every year. 
Fr. Albino mentioned the significance of Independence Day struggle and thanked the Betul villagers for displaying unity and consistency in holding such nationalistic celebrations.
Sudin calls for maintaining unity and peace
PONDA: PWD Minister Ramkrishna (Sudin) Dhavalikar appealed the people to maintain unity, peace and brotherhood for the development of country. 
He was speaking after hoisting Tri-colour at the Independence Day function at Kranti Maidan, Ponda. Recalling the sacrifices of the freedom fighters, he said, “We must always remember them as we are enjoying freedom because of them.” 
Stating that the beautification of Kranti Maidan would be completed soon, he hoped that it would be inaugurated on October2. 
The Kranti Maidan would be thrown open to the public to celebrate the forthcoming Ganesh Festival as most of the work has been completed.  Ponda MLA Lavoo Mamledar, Rohidas Naik, freedom fighters, students, teachers, government officials and parents were present.  PWD Minister along with the dignitaries paid the homage at the Martyrs’ Memorial at Kranti Maidan. 
Various cultural and national integration programmes were organised by school students. Political parties and youth from Ponda took out bike rallies.
 Milind: Inculcate in students a feeling of patriotism 
VASCO: Stating that youth are the country’s future, Power Minister Milind Naik on Monday called upon the parents and teachers to inculcate in students a feeling of patriotism by teaching them about the freedom struggle. 
He was addressing at the Independence Day celebration held at Tilak Maidan, Vasco on Monday.
“It is very important that the students should have the feeling of patriotism and should be proud for our country.  They should know about the freedom struggle. Parents and teachers should ensure that a child needs to be taught about the freedom struggle and how freedom fighters dedicated their lives to give us freedom so that love for nation remains in their hearts,” he said.
“I would like to congratulate each and every government employee for sincerely providing their services to the people by indirectly contributing towards country’s development,” he added.
After receiving guard of honour, Naik and other guests honoured the students of various schools in Mormugao taluka by presenting prizes and certificates in the various sports competitions organised recently.
