MARGAO: Reacting to Gujarat’s Morbi Bridge tragedy, NGO Green Goa Foundation on Tuesday demanded that the government inspect all the bridges in the State, particularly the new ones, and submit a status report. Raison Almeida, Chairman of the Green Goa Foundation added that they have reason to believe that several bridges in Goa may be unstable.
He said that the NGO is deeply concerned with the failing infrastructure being created under the present government, both at the Centre and in the States.
“We have witnessed the newly constructed Atal Setu being constantly closed for repairs. Instead of talking about the bridge that Lord Hanuman built, the BJP must study the technology used and apply it to bridges being built
in the country,” quipped Almeida.
He further said that the collapse of the newly opened Morbi Bridge, which caused the death of more than 135 innocent persons in Gujarat, is unpardonable. The bridge survived nearly 150 years since its construction under British rule but came down within four days after it was repaired and renovated, under the ‘Gujarat Model’.
“The meagre compensation of Rs four lakh paid to the families of the deceased adds insult to the suffering caused to them,” he added.
