PANJIM: In a bid to combat bullfights being illegally organised in the State, the government has now decided to sensitise the police station incharges.

To begin with, on September 21, a sensitisation programme for police inspectors (PIs) and police sub-inspectors (PSIs) from South Goa District will be held at the South Goa Collectorate Office, Margao.

A government advocate, NGO representative, veterinary officer Dr Manil Patil and Dr Charlette Fernandes of Worldwide Veterinary Services and Dr Gawri Yale of Mission Rabies will address police personnel. Dr Yale will address the participants through video conferencing.

South Goa Collector Ruchika Katyal, who is also the chairman of District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA), Margao and Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services and DSPCA Member Secretary Dr Prashant Naik will also be present.

Similar sanitisation programme will also be organised for the PIs and PSIs from the North Goa District soon. These measures are part of various programmes planned across the State following a contempt petition filed by the People for Animals before the High Court of Bombay at Goa.

Meanwhile, the State government on Friday filed an affidavit before the High Court giving details of bullfights being illegally held and the steps taken by the police to prevent/foil them.

As per the affidavit, maximum bull fights were reported in the jurisdiction of the Colva Police Station although the number of “dhirios” is not more than four. It has also given details of false calls and also how police were mislead by giving them different locations when bullfights were organised at some other place. It also gave details of how many “dhirios” were prevented by the police and how many they could not prevent. The matter was later posted for further hearing on October 1.
