To protect Goa’s land resources, GFPK urges Margao citizens to unite against illegal building amendments

MARGAO: Following a crucial meeting in Panjim to discuss proposed amendments to the Goa Building Regulations Act, Margao is gearing up for another impactful gathering set to take place on Monday. Goyche Fudle Pilge Khatir (GFPK), in collaboration with the Goa Bachao Abhiyan, has issued a fervent call to the public, urging their participation in the Margao event aimed at raising awareness about the devastating effects of illegal land and building amendments.

“This is for those who are concerned about the rampant illegal land and building amendment activities that are wreaking havoc on our environment. For those who want to learn more about the devastating effects and take a stand against this destructive practice. Together, let’s uncover the truth and protect our land and natural resources,” said GFPK President Jack Mascarenhas.

“Valuable insights will be shared into the complexities of this issue and understand how it directly impacts our lives, neighbourhoods, and future generations,” added Mascarenhas.

Mascarenhas also highlighted five critical points where the proposed changes by the government will have a significant effect:

“First, the non-allied agricultural use of Eco-sensitive zones in Goa which are A1 and A2. Second, the construction of farmhouses in rice fields and forests as big as 1,000 sq m. Third, the regularisation of unauthorised structures of an area more than 500 sq m. Fourth, the removal of energy-efficient measures through the ECBC 2006 code. Fifth, the permitting of construction of multi-dwelling units on narrow village roads,” said Mascarenhas.

“During this event, the audience will have the opportunity to engage in thought-provoking discussions with experts on the subject matter, discover real-life case studies that highlight the devastating effects of illegal land and building amendments, and participate in interactive sessions and panel discussions,” said Mascarenhas.

“They will also acquire practical knowledge and guidance on combating this issue at a grassroots level and network with like-minded individuals passionate about protecting our land and environment,” he added.

“We can raise awareness and pave the way for a sustainable future. Let’s take a stand against illegal land amendment practices and safeguard our precious resources,” said Mascarenhas.

The highly anticipated programme will be held at the Pope John Paul II Hall in Borda, beginning at 5 pm. Prominent experts, activists, and community leaders will shed light on the alarming repercussions of illegal land and building amendments. Among them are Claude Alvares, Director of the Goa Foundation, Architect Dean DCruz, Architect Elsa Fernandes, and Urban and Regional Planner Tahir Noronha.
