Toddy tappers’ accidental deathcompensation enhanced to Rs 4L

MARGAO: In a significant move for the welfare of toddy tappers in Goa, the Welfare Board has approved a proposal from the All Goa Toddy Tappers Association to enhance the relief amount in the event of death due to a fall.

The relief amount has been increased from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 4 lakh, bringing much-needed support to the families of toddy tappers who face the risks of their profession.

In addition to this, the Association has announced that Goa’s iconic coconut feni, along with coconut jaggery and vinegar, is on track to receive international recognition once these products secure the coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

Francis Fernandes, president of the All Goa Toddy Tappers Association, revealed that the Goa Welfare Board has also agreed to increase compensation for injured toddy tappers.

For cases of natural death, the Welfare Board has approved a compensation of Rs 25,000 for the families of the deceased toddy tapper. Additionally, the Chairman of the Welfare Board has agreed to extend the Agriculture Department’s coconut plucker scheme to include toddy tappers, ensuring broader benefits for workers in the coconut industry.

Fernandes expressed optimism about the ongoing process to secure the GI tag for coconut feni, jaggery, and vinegar, stating that the process is progressing in the right direction. He believes that once the GI tag is granted, these traditional Goan products will gain international recognition.

Through these efforts, the All Goa Toddy Tappers’ Association continues to advocate for the welfare of its members, while also working towards the preservation and international promotion of Goa’s rich culinary heritage.
