Tomatoes out of commoners reach, BJP govt failed to control inflation: Mahila Congress

PANJIM: The Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress (GPMC) on Thursday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government failed to double the income of farmers, who are paid Rs 2 to 4 for tomatoes and they are being sold at Rs 140 per kg in the market, burning a hole in consumers’ pocket.

GPMC president Beena Naik and others protested in the Panjim market against the sharp spurt in vegetable prices and said that government has failed to control the prices.

“Tomatoes have become so expensive. It is very sad that the government failed to control the prices. Farmers are paid very less, while, when it reaches the market the prices are sky high. Modi government has failed to double the income of farmers and provide essential goods at affordable prices to the public,” Naik said.

“How a family with low salary income should live in these circumstances of increasing prices? People are suffering due to the inflation, but BJP government is not bothered,” she said.

Naik pointed out that Congress government in Karnataka has provided much relief to womenfolk by giving doles and free journey in buses. However BJP has failed to give a helping hand.

She said that before coming to power, Narendra Modi was targeting Congress over price rise. “There is no need to tell how prices are doubled or have increased thrice then what they were during BJP’s time,” she said. She added that the BJP government had failed to give solace to the public over inflation. Now they should atleast give two kg tomatoes and vegetables to each and every house.

Dr Pramod Salgaocar said that inflation is disturbing the life of common people.

“We were told that after implementation of GST, prices will come down, but we are cheated by this government. Now a days people can’t afford to purchase milk and other essential goods,” she said.

“BJP should control the prices, or they will come to know its effect. “I N D I A will show them their place,” she said.
