Property worth over Rs 1.45 lakh was damaged, after coconut trees came crashing down on two houses and on one motorcycle at Dessaiwada-Agonda and Nagorcem, as torrential rains played havoc in Canacona taluka late Sunday night.
Incidents of trees uprooting with strong winds ripping were reported at many parts of Canacona taluka. As many as seven coconut trees came crashing down at one location alone, which were caught in the line of grueling whirlwind that hit Agonda.
At about 9.30 pm on Sunday, rains followed by mild lightning and thunders brought the heat to a soothing cool, but past 11 pm, torrential rains with wind blowing ferocious force almost kept everyone in the household on toes.
A huge coconut tree which broke halfway, came crashing down on a house belonging to one Francis Fernandes (Vag) at Dessaiwada-Agonda, causing extensive damages to its roof, tiles and walls, while another one which twisted and broke in-between landed on a firewood storing hut in the neighbourhood.
According to fire station sources, losses cause in the incident alone was over Rs 95,000.
Canacona fire station informed that on Sunday night they cleared a mango tree, which fell and damaged electricity alignment at Khalwade-Canacona, while another mango tree, which fell on the road at Char Rasta was cleared by them.
Fire brigade also reached at Agonda to cut and clear a coconut tree which fell on an electrical alignment at Dessaiwada.
Besides attending other tree uprooting calls, fire brigade personnel also reached Nagorcem on Monday morning to clear two coconut trees, one of which fell on a house belonging to Vidya Nagarshekar and another on a motorcycle (GA-02 N-2223) causing damages to the tune of Rs 50,000.
Rains lashing the taluka in the morning and caught several people, including motorists and two-wheelers, off-guard.
Water logging was seen in several areas including on roads and roadsides, while motorists taking cautious approach were seen watchfully on the wet road.
Pre-monsoons works taken up by Canacona Municipal Council too came under testing, as water-logged streets including NH-17 road passing through the heart of Chaudi town inconvenienced several motorists and pedestrians on Monday afternoon, as rains again lashed the taluka.
Power supply was also disrupted since Sunday evening, even as several municipal areas had no currents for major parts on Monday morning, but electricity personnel raced against time to restore power at most of the affected places.
