PERNEM: Radhika Kaskar, a fisherwoman from Torsem has been gaining attention for her dedication and discipline in order to become a classical singer.

Kaskar, is currently undergoing training under Ugvem-based music teacher Nana Asolkar and spends nearly four hours reciting her lessons.

Her training starts at 8.30 pm and goes on till 12 midnight. She sleeps for just two hours, wakes up around 2.30 am and drives alternatively to Malvan, Betul, Margao and Panjim in order to buy fish.

With the help of her family, she has set up two hotels by selling fish and yet, makes time to recite her musical notes. Her time management has been praised by the locals.

“I was first encouraged by Torsem Sarpanch Prarthana Mote to join women’s bhajan singing group. We were taught by Nana Asolkar. After a while I felt that I should also learn classical music,” says Kaskar.

“This is possible only because of my guru who agreed to teach me at odd hours and my family’s support who helps me to manage my business and my time,” she added.

“I was first in a dilemma how a woman who is busy selling fish all day will manage to learn music. I can understand singing for bhajan groups, but learning classical music is an entirely different ball game. It needs an extreme level of dedication and so, I first refused to teach her. However, she was adamant on learning which impressed me. Not only learning, now she will also be presenting her art in Gurukrupa Sangeet Samaroh,” said her teacher Nana Asolkar.
